The Map card
Where everyone is, with their photos.
What it shows
A map of the area around your home with a pin for each person. Each pin carries the person’s photo from Home Assistant, or their initials if there is no photo, with their first name. Places you have set up in Home Assistant, such as Home and Work, appear as circles with their names. The map zooms to fit everyone.
Someone too far away to fit appears as a note along the bottom edge instead, such as Sam · 412 km away. If nobody has a position, the card says No one is located right now.
The map is a picture, not a live map, so there is nothing to pan. The picture is drawn by Apple Maps, which is credited in the corner. It is refreshed about every 30 seconds, and the pins move about every 2 seconds.
Add the card
Every card is added the same way. If you have done this before, skip ahead.
- On the dashboard, move to a card you want to replace. Press and hold the center of the remote's pad for about a second. The card dims and a Modify button appears on it.
Hold the center of the pad on the card you want to change. - Press the center once to choose Modify. The Choose a card screen opens.

The Choose a card screen. The list down the left side narrows the cards by group. - On the left, choose Home, then move right and choose Map. (You can also leave the list on All and scroll; it is in alphabetical order.)
- Under People, leave Everyone chosen to show each person in Home Assistant, or select Choose People and pick up to twelve people and trackers, then choose Done.
- Under Places, leave Show places such as Home and Work on, or switch it off for a plainer map.
- Check the preview beside the form, then choose Add Map. You return to the dashboard with the new card in place.
Using it every day
- Move to the card and press the center. A full-screen list of People opens.
Press the center of the pad - Each person has a photo, a name, where they are (a place such as Home or Work, or Away), how far they are from home, and how long ago that last changed. Press Up and Down to scroll the list.
- Press Back to close the list.
Good to know
- People come from Home Assistant’s people list, each linked to a phone running the Home Assistant Companion app. A device tracker with a position can be chosen too. If someone is missing, add them in Home Assistant first.
- The card needs Home Assistant, where the people and places are kept. With Apple Home, the card picker dims it and says what it needs.
- While guest mode is on in Short Stay, the card is blank, so visitors cannot see where the household is.
- The card is free. It needs a larger tile than most cards and is not offered in small ones.
- To change who is shown, or remove the card, hold the center of the pad on it and choose Modify.
