The Text card

FreeWorks with: Any Apple TVAbout 1 minute to set up

Your own words on the dashboard, with live readings from Home Assistant if you want them.

What it shows

A title, which is optional, and a few lines of text that you write: a note to the household, the rules for the pool, what the Wi-Fi guest code is for. The card only displays; it has no buttons. Short text is enlarged to fill the tile. Long text is cut off at the edge of the tile, or you scroll it (see below).

With Home Assistant you can put a live reading inside the words, so the text stays true. Until the first value arrives, a reading shows as a dash. If Home Assistant cannot be reached later, the card keeps the last value it had.

Add the card

Every card is added the same way. If you have done this before, skip ahead.

  1. On the dashboard, move to a card you want to replace. Press and hold the center of the remote's pad for about a second. The card dims and a Modify button appears on it.
    < TV ▶❚❚ mute +−
Hold the center of the pad on the card you want to change.
  2. Press the center once to choose Modify. The Choose a card screen opens.
    The Choose a card screen
The Choose a card screen. The list down the left side narrows the cards by group.
  3. On the left, choose Information, then move right and choose Text. (You can also leave the list on All and scroll; it is in alphabetical order.)
  4. Type a Title if you want one. It is optional.
  5. Under Text, type the words. Use the on-screen keyboard, or dictate with the Siri Remote. A text can run to about 4 KB, which is several paragraphs. If it is longer, the setup says Only the first part fits on this card.
  6. To include a live reading, write it the way Home Assistant does, for example {{ states('sensor.outdoor_temperature') }}, using the name of your own sensor. The setup screen tells you if Home Assistant is not connected, because live readings need it. Plain words work everywhere.
  7. Check the preview beside the form, then choose Add Text. You return to the dashboard with the new card in place.

Using it every day

  1. If all the words fit in the tile, there is nothing to press.
  2. If the words are taller than the tile, move to the card and press the center to enter it. Press Up and Down to move the text a line at a time.
  3. Press Back to leave. The text returns to the top.
